Protected Areas and Profitability

Two weeks ago there was a meeting on protected aread, parks and the like, and the Catalan Tourism Agengy Manager, Mrs. Marian Munro, comes up with the opinion that "they must be made profitable".  The news can be read here.

Lovers of nature have always had trouble with that: introducing managerial or business concepts into the nature seems them like non-appropriate. I dont't know exactly what Mrs. Munro meant. If she means that we must attract more visitors to our parks, she's compeletely right as we could do with some more thousands of them. But is she means that parks must stand by themselves and look where they get from the money they need, I am afraid I am not following her.

But in the domain of nature, especially in the interaction man-nature, things are far from clear. Read here is paper from a couple of years ago where private and public ownerships of natural recration areas are discussed...  we're still far from a consensus here, and no one seems to speak in favor of mother nature...
